This summer, Santa Susanna will join the challenge to achieve the Ecovidrio Green Flag for hotel sustainability
4 de July de 2024Banderes Verdes is Ecovidrio’s summer campaign, which recognizes the work of local councils and hoteliers in terms of recycling glass containers and their commitment to progress towards sustainable development.
The City Council of Santa Susanna and more than 35 hotel establishments in the town will compete this summer to win the Ecovidrio Green Flag for sustainability. The non-profit entity in charge of managing the recycling of glass packaging waste in Spain is celebrating the fifth edition of #MovimentBanderesVerdes, its renowned summer campaign which aims to value and recognize the commitment of the local hospitality and municipalities in the recycling of glass containers, environmental protection and progress towards sustainable development.
Thus, Santa Susanna will compete with 34 Catalan municipalities with the aim of achieving Ecovidrio’s “Green Flag of Sustainability” which Castelldefels, Vandellòs and l’Hospitalet de l’Infant already achieved during the last edition of this initiative .
The Green Flags Movement is a campaign with which, every summer, Ecovidrio teams up with municipalities and hoteliers to respond to the high consumption rates of glass containers that are recorded in coastal areas of our country during the summer season . During the summer months, a third of the glass containers put into circulation are consumed and nearly 50% of the single-use glass container waste put on the market is generated by the hospitality sector. Aware of the need to support the hospitality industry, Ecovidrio will launch a team of environmental educators to provide media, information and incentives to the HORECA sector on the Spanish coast.
A consolidated project in favor of sustainability on our coasts
The Green Flags Movement has established itself as a key initiative for Ecovidrio within its alliance with the hospitality sector. At national level, the fifth edition of this campaign will have the participation of more than 156 coastal municipalities from five different autonomous communities and more than 16,000 hotel establishments. All these localities will compete for the nine awards that Ecovidrio will give in the national territory.
Lepe and Rota (Andalusia), Castelldefels and Vandellòs and l’Hospitalet de l’Infant (Catalonia), Alfàs del Pi and Finestrat (Valencian Community), Alcúdia and Menorca (Balearic Islands) and San Pedro del Pinatar (Region of Murcia ) were the nine municipalities recognized in 2023 with this seal of a sustainable tourist town committed to environmental conservation through glass recycling. In addition, two of them will have the opportunity to revalidate their award this summer in the current edition of this initiative.
For its part, Singlot Tapas (Balearic Islands); 1935 Hotel & Apartments and Picaña Hamburguesteria (Catalonia); Hydra and Casa Montaña (Valencian Community); El Rubio 360º (Murcia Region); and Hotel Magazonia, Costacabria Restaurante en el Mar and Restaurante Casa Santi (Andalusia) were the hotel establishments awarded in the last edition of the campaign for their commitment to pioneering measures in favor of the environment and their activism in favor of circular economy
About Ecovidrio
Ecovidrio is the non-profit organization in charge of managing the recycling of glass packaging waste in Spain. In 1997, after the approval of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Law and the start of its operations in 1998, it became the entity managing a recycling model that guarantees a complete service and to which all citizens have access. In terms of financing, 8,000 packaging companies make the recycling system possible, with their contribution through the green point.
Ecovidrio’s work stands out for guaranteeing high-quality recycling through the container, enhancing containerization and collection infrastructures, investing in plans and resources aimed at increasing the recycling of glass containers in the hospitality industry, mobilizing citizens through awareness campaigns and promote prevention and eco-design of packaging.
In the last two decades, the Ecovidrio system has allowed seven out of ten glass containers to be recycled today.
The recycling of glass containers is a fundamental element to contribute to sustainable development, encourage the transition to the circular economy and fight against climate change. In addition, the recycling of glass containers is an activity that supports the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.
